About this journal
The Saga of Chorenn is a Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition campaign, set in a self-created world called Chorenn. This blog is about the creation of this campaign.
The campaign started as an experiment in running a party of characters who had histories and secrets, plus personal goals that may or may not align with the party’s goals. It has evolved into a saga of intrigue and destiny, and it is this creation and evolution process that I hope to document here, when I have time to write about it.
Our gaming group consists of one game master and five players (two fighters, one cleric, one wizard, and one scout). We play with the core rules with very few house rules. One of the few house rules is a variant of teleport, which requires long-distance teleports (> 10 miles) to use a very expensive material component, so that instant travel is restricted. I mandated this rule because I found that free, instant travel negated opportunities for roleplay, side quests, and exploration.
The only other house rule that we use (that I can think of) is that during combat, game statistics, especially the precise amount of hit points you have left, may not be discussed openly. This promotes more roleplaying (“My sword just won’t bite into this monster’s thick hide!” or “Please heal me! I’m about to fall!”) and prevents the game from degenerating into a sea of numbers.
The content of this journal is completely from the gamemaster’s point of view. This does mean that there will be secrets discussed that the player characters don’t know, and sometimes criticisms of the players. If you are one of my players, you shouldn’t be reading this journal.
